Why does the Setup Tool fail to connect to my reader?
If you cannot connect, verify the following:
-
Click Refresh to determine which ports have readers connected to them. Clicking Refresh sends a query string on all COM ports and across the Ethernet network subnet. A DataMan 8000 wireless reader must be awake to respond to the query. Squeeze the trigger to wake up the reader.
-
Make sure that you are not using the keyboard, keyboard wedge, or HID connection: you must use USB Serial, RS-232 Serial, Ethernet or Wireless network to connect the Setup Tool to the reader.
-
Serial Connection
- Make sure that you have scanned the configuration code (USB COM or RS-232 Serial) that matches the type of physical connection you are using (not applicable to Ethernet-only readers).
- Make sure that the COM ports list shows a port where your reader is connected.
- You can use a terminal emulation program such as PuTTY to determine whether the reader is sending any data if the reader is connected to a COM port on the PC.
-
Ethernet Connection
- Make sure that the firewall or antivirus application installed on your computer makes communication with Ethernet devices possible by allowing the appropriate ports (Cognamer:1069 and Setup Tool:44444).
- Verify that your device appears in the list of Network devices.
- Make sure that the IP address you provided in the Add Network Device option is correct.
-
Wireless Connection
- Make sure that the reader is not in sleep mode (squeeze the trigger to wake it up).
- Make sure that a connection is established between your reader and the base station connected to your PC. Unplug both the power and communication cables from the base station, reconnect the cables, then replace the handset in the base station. Wait until the handset indicates that it is linked (with an audible signal) before attempting to connect again.
- Make sure the base station is connected to power.
